Scheltema is an icon in Amsterdam: it was established in 1853 near Dam Square and the Rokin, and soon became one of the leading book stores in the capital. Scheltema later moved to Koningsplein, where it remained till 2014. With the take-over by Novamedia, Scheltema moved to a monumental building at the Rokin, and returned to its historical roots.

Scheltema offers a wide range of new and second-hand books. With more than 3,200 square metres of floor space, the store is able to house over 125,000 titles and 2.5 kilometers of books. The 47 employees share over 500 years of expertise and experience in the industry. By organizing hundreds of events a year, Scheltema strives to be one of Amsterdam’s main cultural centers.

Bringing  children into contact with the pleasure of reading is one of the book store’s focal points. Therefore ‘Scheltema’s Kids Club’ was founded, offering weekly events for children, varying from puppet shows, arts and crafts demonstrations, reading sessions and a cooking club. Scheltema is the first book store with a fully operational kitchen, surrounded by hundreds of cooking books. World famous chefs, such as Jamie Oliver, Yotam Ottolenghi, the Hemsley Sisters and Masterchef Australia’s judge George Calombaris have paid a visit to Scheltema.

Each floor offers working and reading spaces for its visitors, giving Scheltema the homely feel it’s looking for.

Serving the best coffee in town, according to the AD coffee test, Vascobelo, situated on the first floor, is a very welcome addition to the store!
